The most common one is the phone service; it is usually government-run in most European countries. Surprisingly, television is another--several countries had only government-controlled tv (such as the BBC) until recently when they allowed some private channels in addition to the official ones. (It sounds terrible to an American, but then remember that the BBC offers far better programs than most American channels offer.)
