A shell is essentially the first quantum number assigned to an atom. For instance, n=1 is the first shell, n=2 is the second shell, etc. The larger the n value (Hint: n has to be an integer, 1..2..3..4..etc) the further from the nucleus is is. The nucleus contains the atoms protons and neutrons, the shells we are describing contain the electrons.

In essence, assigning a shell number and acknowledging there are shells that contain electrons is a way to further understand the behavior and possible position of electrons in an atom and thus understand it's reactivity, size, etc.

covering that protects a certain specie, object

Or in physics it is a group of electrons with the same principal quantum number that orbit the nucleus of an atom

structure of an atom....it is such that we have a nuclei (neutral ... wid protons n neutrons embedded in it)...which is surrounded by electrons....these electrons are in cirular orbits around the nuclei....each representin a shel (named K , L , M , N ...)each shell has a specific number of electrons it can accomodate..n it decides how "strong" or "weak" are an elements tendencies to react...
