I started my car sales career with Passport (later Saturn 1991)back in1989.
When there first came out there were touted as the alternative to Toyota, Honda, there was lots of hype. They look good. Saturn's have had a reliability problem. But the new ones are designed and built by Opel( a German subsidiary of GM) If any car is maintained properly it can be dependable.

Any new car is reliable if you maintain it. Some lemons get through with any make of car though.
Hondas and Toyotas are usually touted as reliable cars, but if you looks at Y! Answers for them, you see they have as many problems as any other car out there.
Saturns are cheaper with better financing but they also depreciate faster.
Reliability is pretty straight across the board for all cars made after 2000.

All dealerships have a service department, Take care of a car and it can last a long time. We have a Saturn Vue and love it. My grandparents liked ours so much they went a bought one.
As far as dependability I havn't had a problem with mine. And it gets great gas milage. Whatever you get take care of it and it'll be dependable.
