Carry you units along in the calculation and treat them like the numbers by squaring, cancelling, etc:

Ex of in^2 to cm^2:

L(in^2)*(2.54 cm/in)^2 = L*2.54^2 (cm^2) = 6.45*L (cm^2)

This is a convenient way to treat any conversion factor. I don't know why this is not emphasized more in school.

for your problem you have multiple factors to use:

5280 ft/mi
12 in/ft
2.54 cm/in

multiple these to get the factor for cm/mi (call it k) and square it as you use it:

1 mi^2 * [k (cm/mi)]^2 will give your answer.

so? All that means is the each conversion must also be squared:

1 mi^2 *(5280 ft/mi)^2*(12 in/ft)^2*(2.54 cm/in)^2 =

it is simple
if 1ft = 12in
then 1 sq ft = 12in*12in =144 sq in
so all you have to do is to convert firs 1 mile to cm
and then do the squaring as indicated above for feet and inches
(i am assuming you know how to convert mile into cm and so i have only tackled the squaring part)

1 mile = 5280 feet = 63360 inches. I inch = 2.54 cm, so 63360 inches = 160934.4 cm. If you square both numbers, 1 mile squared = 25,899,881,103.36 cm squared.

1 mile^2=1mile*1mile
=(5280*12")(5280*12")
=(5280*12*2.54 cm)^2
