The + precedes the Country Code. So a USA phone number would start with +1 (like +1 212 555-1212). A UK phone number would start with +44, etc. It means that if you're dialing within the country you don't bother with the stuff after the +; if you're dialing internationally you have to dial whatever your outgoing international dial prefix is (0, 00, etc.) and then the country code and then the number.

Because the international access code is different in differnt countries (011 USA, 009 Nigeria, 00 in many other countries) It would be a problem for numbers you have saved in memory - you want to store all your numbers in international format, but which prefix do you use as it depends on which country you roam to. To get round this, the '+' character is the universal international access code. It is immediately followed by the country code.

It depends which country you are in. The phone automatically replaces it with the right digits to make an international call and uses the next 1 or 2 digits to decide which country.

You can see the "+" symbol in the incoming calls on ur mobile... As we call a no from our mobile, our no will be displayed in the receiver's mobile...

Thus our mobile no is converted in to datas of 0s and 1s and transferred... While receiving, the data received will have a blank space for the 0s before a whole no... So a "+" is generated before the first whole no of the received data...

Actually the "+" symbol indicates that as many 0s can be added instead of "+"...

eg., we have a mobile no of "9856231475"... When we dial to our friend, he receives "-country code-9856231475".... This country code indicated can depend on the region... in India it will be +919856231475... actually, it is 00919856231475....

The + sign represents the two zeros of most international codes. For example, 001 = +1 or 0044 = +4.
