Well you need to start be setting an obtainable goal weight to lose. A lot of people always try to lose some obscene amount of weight and then wonder why the diet isn't working. Make sure that if you were having problems in the past to consult a doctor, sometimes they give you a better program to follow than someone else will. Don't do it alone, it isn't easy when you do. Cardio will burn fat first, then use weights to build muscle.

Make sure your weight is actually something to be concerned about. I know that society's view of what is a 'good' weight has been really twisted recently, so check with your Body Mass Index (you can google it and find calculators for that online) And take into consideration how muscular you are. Muscle weighs more than fat and so you might be 'heavy' but in reality have no issues with your weight. (you might look into getting your body fat measured if you want to really know where you stand and if you need to loose weight, how much, etc). That said, to get back to the question itself (sorry, that was a bit of a rabbit trail)
Don't "go on a diet" you need to start changing how you eat in your lifestyle, not just for X amount of time or until you reach X size because once you stop that diet, your weight will most likely just go straight back up.
I would say moderation is key. I know a lot of diets will forbid all those 'tasty' foods that we all crave from time to time. If you start wanting chocolate chip cookies, eat a healthy snack, and then if you still want it, eat one. But very much limit the amount of snack foods you keep readily available. I know for me, that if they're there, I tend to eat them.
Don't do diets that take out a whole food group or factor (protein, carbs etc) Go with the food pyamid. Eat smaller portions more frequently. And exercise. Find something you like to do. Dance, yoga, basketball or something. I know I don't like just exercising for the sake of exercising, but if it's something I like, I'll be much more likely to do it, and more likely to stick with it.

I don't like complicated diets and I don't like diets that take a long time. You need to find something that you like and that will be easy for you to do long term.
For me, it was the Kimkins lean low carb diet. It's low carb like Atkins but without the fat and low carb like South Beach but with less carbs. This is why weight loss is so fast!
I lost 76 lbs in 4 months, but many people lose 1 lb a day. You should check it out and get the free newsletter. They do once a couple times a month.

Start an exercising program.Get together with some of your friends and start going to the gym on a daily bases. If your with your friends, then you won't feel as intimedated as you probally would with strangers. If working out with your own diet and exercising plan dosen't work, then get a trainer. If it costs to much
$ than wake up a bit earlier and look on t.v. for those exercising shows. Also get rid of all that junk food in your home.

Very simple...eat less calories than you burn to begin with and to maintain, eat and burn the same amount of calories...OH...and don't sit on your rear end...be active in every capacity you can...e.g.walk up the stairs instead of taking the elevators, park away from the entrance, and you can figure out the rest....
