Why do we not make voting mandatory?

Why do we not make voting mandatory?
If we do not want to make it mandatory, then why do we not pay people to vote?

Why do people choose not to vote in the first place?

People have a right to participate, or not participate, it's 'un-American' to force people against their will.

People don't vote, - since deep down they know they are ignorant as to what the issues are, - or even what govn't actually does.

So rather than saying that they're ignorant, they parrot the same lines they've heard from other people.

Many people do not vote because they feel frustrated and alienated by the political system. They see politicans who seem to care about corporations more than people, and they believe no single person can make a difference with the government. It didn't help things in the United States in 2000 when a President was declared by the Supreme Court to be elected even though his opponent actually got more votes, yet he proceeded to act as if he had been given a mandate to make sweeping changes.

I feel that voting shouldnt be mandatory as it is a free country and we have the right to choose what we want to do. I feel that some people dont care to vote as they dont have trust with any government. They feel that what ever government get in it wont make a differance

Because we are a democracy
In a democracy people have the option of not voting.
If we paid people to vote, some unscruplus people could sway people to vote a certain way.

people avoid voting as they are fed up with the ruling parties and they know tht these ruling parties are not going to help them in any way
