On a ruler, looking at the metric side, they are the teeny-tiny lines. A millimeter is about the thickness of a dime.

All of the above are correct if you are looking for a general answer or definition regarding metric and "imperial" measurements.
Since the question is about measuring wood, you might really want to know how to convert millimeters into some measurement that is easier for you to use.
So, divide the number of millimeters (mm) by 25.4, and you will have inches.
The results will be in DECIMAL inches (for example, 54mm = 2.125 inches). If you need to convert to fractional inches, keep the whole number part and convert the decimal to fractions using this table:
.063 = 1/16
.125 = 1/8
.188 = 3/16
.250 = 1/4
.313 = 5/16
.375 = 3/8
.438 = 7/16
.500 = 1/2
.563 = 9/16
.625 = 5/8
.688 = 11/16
.750 = 3/4
.813 = 13/16
.875 = 7/8
.938 = 15/16
So 2.125 inches would be 2-1/18 inches.
Smaller units would be 1/32 of an inch for every 0.031 and 1/64 of an inch for every 0.015 (if you are doing something like scale modeling).
Hope that helps!
