the Dell Studio 15 is a laptop isn't it? Laptop CD and DVD drive units do not pull in the tray like a tower does you have to manually shut the tray, they all do it. Because there is less space in a laptop case the motor drive unit that opens and closes the drive tray is not installed. That said, your issue would seem the be the lock which holds the drive tray is not capable of keeping the drive tray closed. this may be because it is broken or perhaps just out of alignment. With the tray fully open pull the tray toward each corner so that you "stretch" the tray on the runners. What this sometimes does is realign the runners so that the catch actually does what it is supposed to, that is lock into position when you close the tray door. If it still does not hold then it is not worth fixing (you say it is already out of warranty) just buy a new drive unit they are not that expensive and are simple to fit, usually just the one retaining screw. As to the noise, it is most likely the CD spinning on the motor and becoming unbalanced as the tray is moving, the other noise is where the drive spindle retracts leaving the CD spinning in the tray, it will eventually damage the CD disc so don't do it.

assuming you have dvd software - like Roxio or Cyberlink DVD or the XP Plus media pack - and the DVD doesn't have copy protection on it - The software will copy the DVD contents to a temporay location on your hard drive and then write it to a blank DVD. So - make sure you have lots of hard drive space. A conventional DVD holds about 4.75 GIGS of data. I'd also want at least 7 Gigs of space to allow for buffering and overhead.I'd defrag my hard drive first to make the process faster. Don't run any other programs during the process and turn off the screen saver. Make sure you are using A/C power and not the battery because this will take lots of time and system resources. Good Luck

This can sometimes happen. It has to me. Don't worry, it won't be a permanent fault. But this time you will need to push the end of a paperclip into the small hole in the front of the drive. Push it in quite a way and the drive bay will click open manually. Hope that helps.

I'm guessing either there's something mechanically wrong with the laptop - in which case major stores do a great repair facility - or the software link is not operating properly.

Try going to my computer and then right click on the CD drive. Then click eject. If it still wont open try manually. There's a small hole on the outside of the drive tray near the eject button. Push an opened (unfolded) paper clip in to manually eject the drive.

You have the answers for Microsoft, but on a Mac you
have to shutdown the computer using the power button,
and put in on after, also on power button whilst
holding down the mouse all the time. When the computer
turns on, the drawer will open.

There's either a cd inside that is jamming it or it has been unplugged inside the computer or it's just broken.

it's something mechanical, my dvdr drive won't open and there is nothing stuck it in, it's just not catching the spindle and you need to have it repaired
