You can play a game with him and ask him not to speak for a couple of hours and use other ways to express what he wants... he'll understand quickly why we talk! It's just easier!

this is a good question, I'll give you the same answer by Noam Chomsky from the documetory: Stupidity, a study on the specific definition I highly recommend it. Anyhow Noam says that with our human development we eventually obtained a language cortex in our brains that allows us to speak. Just as we obtained opposable thumbs ect. It was the next natural step provided by the grace of God to further our ability to adapt and survive.

Same reason birds chirp, dolphins squeak, and dogs bark. To communicate. Just listen to a conversation in a language you can't understand it sounds like just a bunch of random noise. Man we're noisy creatures.

We talk because when we talk, sounds come up from... somewhere, and they form words than can even be put together to form sentences that, for the most part, make sense... to some. Maybe I should have thought about how to better communicate that before I said it, heheheheh.

To communicate your ideas and thoughts - though the deaf do not talk with their voice - in general - same thing, they are speaking through their hands and gestures.

Without communication, earth would be pretty boring..
