Be kind. I try to teach my kids that at any moment their lives can change for the worse. Being kind, courteous, thinking about the other person and putting their feelings first can reap great rewards. They don't see that yet, but they are kind people. They have empathy for other people and enjoy helping the less advantaged and they actually say thank you. My cancer taught them that "things" are as important they thought they were, and their assistance throughout my teatments (without my having to ask) was invaluable to me. Now that my treatments are done, that behavior is still evident and I am so grateful for them.

In one run-on sentence: Love others as you love yourself and treat others the way you want to be treated.
I know it's biblical but I think it's still the best basic advice for a life well-lived.
