The Motherboard controls its functions using a language called BIOS (Basic input /output system) but all instructions are carried out by the DOS(disk operating system).Bill Gates invented the system and formed Microsoft around it and at one point 99% of all computers operated using MS dos.Things aren't that different now except there are competitors with other operating systems who are trying to break Microsoft's hold on the market.

The kernel of the Operating System, generally. On a monolithic OS, like Windows, there is little distinction between the kernel and the rest of the OS. On a modular OS like Linux, there is a large distinction.

The Operating system includes the kernel, but it also includes the user interface, and arguably any bundled software. The kernel is the 'brain' of the OS, and is what does all the thinking. In general a program will talk to a bit of the OS which will then talk to the kernel.

The wikipedia article on Operating Systems, and the links inside it, should give you a good insight into the workings:

An operating system (OS) is a computer program that manages the hardware and software resources of a computer. At the foundation of all system software, the OS performs basic tasks such as controlling and allocating memory, prioritizing system requests, controlling input and output devices, facilitating networking, and managing files. It also may provide a graphical user interface for higher level functions.

GNU/Linux like http://pclinuxos.com

It also runs all 45,000 computers for Microsoft.com, Hotmail.com, MSN.com

Linux runs all 100,000 google.com clustered computers.
It runs NASA, the DOD, the DOE nuclear programs, NSA. And, it runs 165 national governments, 4500 regional governments, the Fortune 1,000 successful, rich, businesses, and all the schools in 39 states have adapted to GNU/Linux for savings of about $1200 per student per year.

Oh, and all the charities and churches, have switched to GNU/Linux, after the Salvation Army got sued by Microsoft because they were using 'donated' computers, and that is not allowed in the Microsoft shrinkwrap EULA!

Just start the computer with the Live CD of http://pclinuxos.com
