Always puzzled me to why Scottish men wear tartan 'skirts'???
That and the daft looking Buffalo's scrotum attached to the front. Not to mention those football styled rolled-up socks.
Traditional Highland dress? Traditional transvestites more like. Let's face it, if I started wearing skirts down my 'local' not only would I be laughed out the place, but I'll probably be leaving through the nearest window.

There are many countries colder, wetter and windier than Scotland, the ground is not covered in thistles and snow, I last saw a thistle about two years ago 200 miles from here, I think there was a little snow last year, there was a lot more in England, and all the men do not wear kilts, you will hardly ever see one, except possibly a few guys at a wedding or something. They are called kilts not skirts. So stop being a total (probably English) fanny trying to stir it up!! Also in your own words, 'a national dress' not day to day wear, whats your national dress? Robin Hood tights with bells on your toes and a funny hat?

It's because Scotland is a cold wet country and the ground is covered in thistles. It would be very uncomfortable to go out without the kilt.
When the kilt was invented, the English peasantry wore smocks. As for the nobility - just take a look at a picture of Henry VIII. Neither style of dress would be much use in Scotland.

The kilt will keep you cool in the summer and I always got a lift without any problems from women drivers. Even in winter the kilt keeps you warm because there is so much material in it. Kilts are not worn so much now in Scotland, but they are a good way to get some female attention.

It is because the sheep know what a zipper sounds like.
LOL.
On a more serious note.
Kilts were worn by the Scots to distinguish themselves from the English. in the modern world, they are now a symbol of stature. the lords of the land and there family's had tartan patterns but the lower classes did not.
I hope that this is a good enough answer as this is how it was explained to me by my cousin Hamish.

The scots are so butch that any form of sentiment is seen as effeminate. And that's just the women. The kilt is a perfect means for the males to get in touch with their girlie side ( and the times you see them in their little skirts would suggest they really love it)

What's wrong with it? National dress isn't worn all the time and the kilts are made in different tartans which denote a particular family or clan so it relates to the man's heritage.
