I had gone through so many vacuums with roller bars and brushes because the bearings and cheap plastic housings burn up or break that I decided to go with an ordinary Shop Vac and bought an accessory to do carpet and hardwood floors. There's very little to tear up, it has stronger suction, and I can clean up wet or dry spills even in my car all for less than $100.

I use an upright Panasonic that works great. I try for 12 amp, which gives good suction power. Hoover is good. I look for bagless now; you save so much money by not having to buy bags, and you can see if you picked up anything that shouldn't have ended up vacuumed. Whatever you do, stay away from Dirt Devil. I have found, and other people I know, also, that this product is a piece of crap. I bought one once, and it sucked because it didn't suck! Took it right back to the store. Sorry, Dirt Devil people, but you need to make a better product! I also stay away from Kenmore products. You can only get them at Sears, and I've had bad luck with Kenmore. Good luck.

If you could just go another $100, this is probably the best vacuum you can buy. We have the oreck XL classic, for $299.95, plus you get a free 5lb canister vac, which has very good suction, and a cordless iron, for free, just for trying it..We bought ours about 3 years ago, and are very happy with it. I always bought the cheaper vacuums, and it seemed like I was replacing them every 2 or 3 years. You will spend more $ initially, but it will last twice as long>>

Oreck. Any model. I have the Oreck XL its wonderful. Most hotels use them cause they are light weight and durable. I figured if they can be used for industrial use, they must be good.
