Obviously, non-operative treatment is always better if your fractured bone is not displaced or malaligned or if it is, it can be set right by your doctor and allow natural healing helped by a cast. You have no wounds, no postoperative pain, no possible infection to deal with. Operative treatment comes in if you cannot achieve natural bone healing. Your orthopedic or hand surgeon knows best. Just make sure he doesn't have too many bills to settle.

If your MD says he can reduce the fracture without surgery but your finger will be deformed or will lose function than surgery is the way to go. But if you can have the MD reduce the fracture cast it and after 6 week you can go to PT and get the motion/strenght back in your finger/hand. Your option is to have an ORIF (surgery) on the 3rd met. or the cast/finger brace.
