There are active glaciers today. Active means they melt some around the edges in summer (atomosphere), but are replenished in winter (atmosphere). I have been on, under, and through one in summer in Norway.

Most of Alaska's glaciers have been retreating fairly rapidly, most likely due to global warming. While there is a seasonal growth and decline, in the late 20th Century and early 21st Century the summer loss has been much more than the winter growth.

Other glaciers, such as those in Glacier National Park in Montana, have retreated even more dramatically. Grinnell Glacier has retreated more than a kilometer in just over 100 years.
