Topaz is soapy feeling when run under water. It is a very hard rock, however this is the feel. If you want more information you might try contacting the owners of the Morefield Mine in Amelia Virginia. it is a working mine and you can find topaz, amazonite, tanzanite, garnets, amathyst there as well as several other semi precious gems in the rough.
