The first settlers in Jamestown did not have to pay for passage. The were sent here on a Charter signed by King James I. The "Virginia Company" was supposed to form a settlement, find gold, and scout out a waterway to the "Orient."

Eventually, the Virginia Colony became a farming community. The first Africans to arrive were treated the same way as European indentured servants.

Nearly all of the original free colonists were sent here to expand business. The modern equivanent would be a Dallas law firm opening a branch office in Memphis. Some of the existing lawyers would be transferred there at company expense.

Indentured servants who came to America later worked for three years to pay off the cost of the voyage. They worked hard in awful conditions by modern standards so do not take a fast food job and multiply by three years. After service their life got better and overall it was an improvement over being a peasant back home so I would equate it to the price of a college degree in education.

They were wooden, but the design was flawed, and the colonists quickly found that these houses would burn down whenever the fireplace was used to heat the home. This led to an early design change as shown in Steven's sources.
