How far down do you cut when you don't want to go all the way through but you just want to show the white and make it thin enough for light to shine through? Also what is the best tool to use when carving words like a signature into a pumpkin?

The best tools are found in those pumpkin-carving kits. There's something for every purpose. I heard about someone using a Dremel rotary tool for intricate work, but it seems to me that would get pretty gunky.

EDIT: After posting, I found this:

I have always found that the best way is to just remove the orange skin and up to about 1/2" into the flesh. Then I use a spoon and scrape out the inside of the pumpkin in the areas I want to glow. I normally do this in the evening then i can set a light inside and shut off the lights in teh room to see how it looks. As far as the best tool I just use a sharp paring knife but have wandered about trying a carving chisel.
