You do brackets first. This is a saying I learnt when I was in primary school that tells you the order:
BODMAS
B Brackets
O Of
D Division
M Mulitiplication
A Addition
S Subtraction
Its stuck with me for about 15 years!!

usually you pu them last, as in 2(3+4) which means times the total in the brackets, by 2. But I think you could possibly put it last, I think it would be understood that way too. You are both right, but you are more correct than your partner. lol xxxxx

I always told my class of 11 year olds that brackets come first...and used the acronym BIDMAS
Brackets
Indices
Divide
Multiply
Add
Subtract
Needless to say, they were the smartest kids in the junior school.

From a mathematical point of view, all grouping symbols--parentheses, brackets, fraction bars, root symbols, etc.--are treated the same. They ALL come first. If you have more than one grouping symbol in the same problem, you work from inside out.

How does it matter. Even if you get the correct answer he wont agree. The dispute is more important. Go, see a couple counselor. (P.S: refrain from telling your counselor the source of your dispute. lol)

First. In school we were taught to remember BIDMAS
Brackets, indices, division, multiply, add, subtract. I think that was all the correct words for the letters, but if u ask a teacher they should know.

If you have a question like [(3x-2x+1)+(2x-4)] then you would do the parenthases first, then do whats in the brackets.
