In my opinion, not so amazing. I sold Alienware for a couple of years, and I find that you pay a premium for the Alienware name as well as for their fancy cases and accessories. Also, they are stocked with "premium" brand parts which could be substituted for much cheaper parts with the same specs.

As I used to tell my customers, you will always pay a huge premium for top-of-the-line performance. Computers have an average useful lifespan of about three years. Most likely, you could spend probably half the amount you're looking at for the next model down in a non-premium brand and it would perform just fine for you. And when three years are up and it's time to get a new PC, the computers in that price range will be three years more advanced--probably better machines than the Alienware you were originally going to buy.

Alienware computers are top-notch machines, don't get me wrong. For most people, though (even high-end gamers), they just don't offer enough to justify the jump in price. Anyway, if you do decide to get an Alienware, I would HIGHLY advise that you wipe the hard drive as soon as you get it. They come stocked with a ton of junk software on them, and the ones I sold commonly had software problems out of the box. Hope this helps with your decision!

Alienware charges too much for their things and rely on naive consumers. For example their Alienware ALX series run for $5,000! They use water cooling on the processors. This is a pretty big ripoff. For $5,000 you could build a top of the line PC, and use phase-change cooling. Big words for what's basically a little refridgerator for your processor. Phase change cooling can cool your processor down to -20 or below! At that temperature you can overclock a processor with no harm to insanely faster speeds than anyone could ever reach with water cooling. Here is a website which reviews one phase change cooling device:

The bottom line is, that Alienware is not worth the high price. For what they charge, you can build something that's 20-30% faster. You're paying for the Alienware name, not quality components. If you really want amazing speed, build your own phase change cooled computer, overclock it to insane levels, add dual SLI video cards, and possibly a physics card, and still then it will be cheaper than Alienware.

They have good parts that can be configured to build a computer, but there's nothing amazing about it. They're way overpriced.

You'd save a lot of money by building a computer with parts from newegg

Everyone so far is right. way to EXPENSIVE. Buy the same parts yourself and you save about half the cost of alienware.

The Lunatic, and Dave are absolutely right. Sure, they're fantastic computers, but they're only worth the hardware that's used in them. Build it yourself, piece by piece on NewEgg, and see the price difference. Not to mention they have the ugliest cases. Alien heads? I mean, come on...how lame.
