It cant be because your head is closer because farting under a quilt doesn't smell hafl as bad

because the bubbles are accelerating upwards, and continue upwards at a certain speed to your nose when the toxic gases evolve from the surface. this is usually not the case out of water because a fart in air dissipates in all directions and does not discriminate from friend or foe.
(note that farts dont naturally rise in air. the really offensive smells come from sulphurous gases which are all denser than air)

I'm going to say because it's in a warmer environment. The same reason warm food has a more noticeable aroma than cold food. The heat speeds up the reaction that releases the scent.

I find cabbage farts or, the farts of a family member, far more offensive. My sister farts at anything...it's quite impressive.
