Keeping eye contact is a skill you can learn over time, just like any other skill. Right now, just force yourself to maintain eye contact for as long as you can before you look away. It will become easier and easier, and it will become a habit. Eventually you'll just do it automatically. Keep in mind that the other person will appreciate the eye contact as they're speaking to you, so it's good for both of you.

I find that it is easier to make eye contact if I am standing at an arms length or more from the person. That way you can make eye contact, but it doesn't feel quite as intimate because of the physical distance. It also makes the other person more likely to be looking at your eyes than other places.

Eye contact is most important for me to be able to trust that person. To be able to get over it, try to build the confidence to do it and practice and of course think that it is the norm for most people to trust someone even during interviews and a mere introduction to a stranger by a friend. If you are the shy type, you can alway practice to make it perfect.

I have the same exact problem. I'm now 22, and I have made a personal point to get confortable looking people in the eye. In a corporate business, it is important to show that confidence. I'll never be "comfortable" with it, and it does take a great deal of willpower to overcome.

You are probably shy, I was too as a young girl and back then they said it meant dishonesty, I was devestated to think people would think I might be dishonest so I worked hard to overcome it and I did. Now I have some people comment how I look them right in the eye and how it makes them feel weak, it is so hard to overcome though that I will continue to be as I am. I don't know how this goes anymore so much has changed..........some people in my book are just shy. good luck

I think that eye contact is a very intimate thing. In certain situations I feel the same way, like if I am uncomfortable with the other person.

I have the same problem and i don't know if theres a way to get rid of it. But i can deal with it fine if i just ignore it and wait until i'm more comfortable with the person. It's not like the person will think you're weird just because you don't look them right in the eye. And if they do, screw them. :-)

I live in Japan and it is a big no-no to have direct eye contact with someone you do not know well. There is no shame in averting your gaze a bit...some guys find is alluring...the "little bit shy" look. There is nothing wrong with your avoiding direct contact until you know someone better. When I am in US I do the same. People understand...no one has criticized me yet!

I used to have the same problem. I had to start making myself do it. I mean I had to tell myself to try to see what color people's eyes are just so I would look at their eyes.
