I just got me a gateway laptop, and i hooked up the router and it says the laptop found the router but it cant connect for some reason, then i started messing with it and now it need a password for the router and i dont know what it is now, but i want to know why it would connect even though it found the router before i messed with it.

Linksys routers will let you connect out of the box, but note that there is no security until you set it.

The default username is "admin". The default password is blank. If you have not changed them, they should work.

RTFM, read the freakin' manual.

If the router is linksys, the default password is 'admin' for the setup with no username, but that is just to access the wireless router, you need to set up the router to connect to the internet also.

The default password should be in the documentation that came with the router.

If that doesn't help, the documentation will tell you how to reset the router to the factory settings. That should straighten it out.
