The refrigerator gets it's cold air from the freezer and if to much ice builds up in the freezer the cold air cannot get into the refrigerator. There is little motor inside the refrigerator called the evaporator timer motor and for 15 minutes every 8 hours it defrosts the ice build up in the freezer these motors can stick and not turn on the defroster. This is probably what happened to you. If you can find the motor inside the refrigerator there is a little screwdriver slot where you can manually advance the timer. do this until it you hear a click then the freezer should make weird noises while defrosting. After that the timer might work normally for a while. If it stuck once it will stick again. It should be replaced. Do not try to break the ice away in the freezer with a fork, knife or something like that. If you make a mistake you will be very sorry.

My guess is that you have a self defrosting model. If so, it works by blowing air through the freezer compartment, then sending that cold air into the refridgerator part. You likely have seperate temperature controls for both parts, so I would check those first, and make the fridge section is set where you want it.
Years ago I had a problem where the air channel between the two sections got blocked with ice, so the air couldn't flow. I had no money to hire a repairman at the time, so I took carefully took the freezer section apart till I found what the the problem was, melted the ice with a hair dryer, and put the parts back in. The refridgerator (which happened to be a Kenmore) worked fine for year afterwards.

Check to see if the exaporator fan is running, check to make sure that when you close the door the light does not stay on, there should be a setting control for refrigerator part, see if you can feel cold air coming from there. If the defrost timer, thermostat or defrost coils are bad you will have ice in the freezer making it seem like it is working, but actually not be as cold as it should be. Sometimes if you catch it at the right time you can pull the tray out at the bottum of the refigerator and see if there is water in it. I mean under the refrigerator itself.

Turn the knob to a higher setting inside the frig on the back wall one knob is the freezer and the other one is for the other area.
leave the freezer one alone...turn the other one to a higher number... if this does not work..you need to get it serviced..
