First
You expand both of the sides
i.e.
x^2 + 4x + 4x + 16 = x^2 + 2x - 2x - 4
x^2 + 8x + 16 = x^2 - 4
Bringing x^2 together will eliminate both of them
hence,
8x = -4-16
8x = -20
x = -20/8 (Fraction) or decimal = -2.5

Don't people around here take two looks at their answer? The following answer that has been shown a few times is correct:
(x+4)(x+4) = (x-2)(x+2)
(x^2+8x+16) = (x^2 - 4)
8x + 16 = -4
8x = -20
x = -20/8 = -10/4 = -5/2.

x= -2.5
This would make both sides equal to 2.25.
To solve:
(x+4)(x+4)=(x-2)(x+2)
Use the foil method (F irst O uter I nner L ast) to multiply the terms together. On the left, multiply the first "x" by the other "x across from it; then multiply the first x by the 4 across from it. After that, multiply the 4 by the x across from it; then multiply 4 by the other 4 across from it. You will get:
x^2+4x+4x+16
Combine like terms:
x^2+8x+16
For the other side, you can use a short cut. Notice that you have the same terms in each parentheses exept you have different signs (+/-) in the middle. Since this is true, just multiply the first x by the second, then the negative 2 by the positive 2.
x^2-4
Rewrite the problem as:
x^2+8x+16=x^2-4
Subtract "x^2" from both sides.
8x+16= -4
Subtract 16 from both sides.
8x= -20
Divide both sides by 8.
x= -2.5

(x+4)(x+4) = (x-2)(x+2)
x^2+8x +16 = x^2 -4
cancell x^2 from both sides
8x+16 = -4
8x = -20
x = -20/8 or -5/2

x^2+16+8x=x^2-4
x^2 will cancel out in both the side
8x=-20
x=-20/8
x=-5/2
x=-2.5

(x+4)(x+4)=(x-2)(x+2)
first simplifly both sides using FOIL method
x2+4X+4X+16=x2+2X-2X-4
Simplyfly further
x2+8X+16=x2-4
Balance
8x+16=-4
8x=-12
x=-1.5

(x+4)(X+4) does not equal (X-2)(X+2)
if you foil that your saying that
x^2 +8x+16 = x^2 -4
That is not a true statement.
