the word "paranoid" is an over-used, generalized term and it's not what she's doing. And if you are saying she has serious problems then you've been on the internet in chat much too long. Maybe she doesn't know you would come to her if you have issues, but maybe someone in the group "has" come to her with an issue in private, or maybe she overheard something, and she's merely trying to get to the bottom of it.

Does your group talk about her in the office, or do you think she just senses she is not liked? Be careful not to join in on any discussions about your boss in the office, and try to turn any mention of her into positive comments. You can be honest with your co-workers about this by letting them know that if there are bad "vibes" toward the boss you will all suffer for it. You will probably have to be a little fake at first, but once the boss's mind is at ease, you can relax again. You never have to be her friend, but don't be her adversary either.

I don´t think she is purposely trying to stir things but it could be a case that she has come from a different environment where she has been the chief arbiter of problems. Would it true to say she is fairly new in your company? If so then maybe you ought to tell her that you are one big happy family and involve her in your social gatherings etc. I can see where she is coming from it is probably her way of getting accepted.

bosses have control trips. when things aren't going wrong, it's their job to find out why nothing's going wrong. unfortunately sometimes they actually CAUSE the problem themselves. sounds like she is totally paranoid but maybe her efforts would be best spent on what great teamwork you all do. otherwise, she will be on one side and the rest of the office will be on the other. maybe she's just re-establishing herself as the evil head honcho?! good luck!
