A 512 MB stick of RAM will cost you about 50 dollars from http://www.tigerdirect.com (they are a great site, I use them all the time.) If you buy a 1 GB stick of RAM from there, it will cost you about $90, so the more you want the less cost per MB. Not all RAM is compatible with all motherboards. You need a specific type of RAM to match up with your motherboard. To find yout which type of RAM this is go to http://www.crucial.com and download their system scanner. It can help you determine what type of RAM you need.

You have got a lot of good Answers, Now.

If you are looking for RAM > 512MB then I assume you are using P-IV machine running at > 2.8GHz.

For such machines almost all RAMs are compatible, you go to market and ask computer dealers for the RAM, tell them your configuration and certainly they will help you to find out correct RAM for your PC. For your Reference Approximate Price for 256MB - Rs1000, 512MB - Rs1800 and 1GB - Rs2500. You can bargain the dealer for best price and warranty.
