Spin is a vestige of a particle's wave nature. If a particle is at it's lowest energy level, that residual spin is characteristic of that type of particle.

'Spin' doesn't mean that the particles are actually turning on their axis like little tops. It's merely a name given to one of the characteristics of a particle. Just like 'mass' or 'charge'.

I guess the best answer would be, "Because that's the way the Great Spirit made it." ☺

I think nobody knows..because the spin is a contruction of the hman mind to explian certain anomalies present in the first atomical theories...to explain the Stern-Gerlach Experiment.
