I wish you good luck to begin with
In CA you may want to find housing where you are sharing a house with others in the LA area.
Driving from MD to LA it is about 4 to 5 day drive if you drive about 8 to 10 hours a day with few stops. Having someone share in the driving would be ideal.
Yes, as most have mentioned save every penny you can get your hands on. It is very expensive to live out there. Most all places ask for first and last months rent and is about 800 to 1500 a month depending on where you live.

Well it is expensive to live near a real city, like SF or LA. LA of course is where the movie studios are, but SF has good arts and stage performances. Plus it's more laid back. My cousin rented a room in a house in a not great district in SF for $1100 a month. In Napa Valley a room in a house goes for $500-$800 a month and many people commute to the city. Rough guesstimate on driving? $50 a night for a motel room, $25 a day for food, and you probably already know how much gas you need for a full tank per day of pretty much straight driving.

For rent money, most places will want first and last month's rent, plus the deposit which could be double the rent.

In other words, save every penny you can lay your hands on for the next year. Best wishes, hon, and welcome to Cali!

it all depends on what kind of gas mileage your car gets. if you want to SAVE money drive straight through and stop only when you have to, and don't stay at a nice hotel, stay at the motel 6. that should cut your costs in half.
