I am writing an entended definition essay about either a hero or courage. I'm looking for feedback on how anyone else might describe those things.

In my opinion, a hero is anyone who always strives to do he/she believes is right, regardless of what is popular or what is easiest. Heroes are courageous, as they put themselves on the line for what they believe in. They may risk their jobs, their image with their peers, or their lives, but they stand strong and don't back down. A hero may be the one who stands up for the unpopular kid in school that gets unfairly teased. It may be the teacher who believes passionately in what they teach and wants to light a fire inside each of their students to motivate them to succeed, when so many other teachers are just putting in their time until retirement. It may be the soldier, police officer or firefighter who faces his fears and does his job to help others.

Hero -- has a lot to do with courage. Courage does not mean the absence of fear, it means facing fear down and doing what is right even though the hero is scared s****less.

Our men in uniform are a good example of what a hero is.

Also policemen and women.

Also certain politicians who take unpopular (but never the less right) positions on critical issues such as the war in Iraq.

To me a hero is someone who has the courage to do the right thing, even when it means going against the crowd. We need more heroes today--people who are willing to stand up and say our government is wrong.
