Till the Battery is Full

The official policy of Macintosh is:

ALWAYS plug the charger into the wall FIRST!

Then, plug it into the laptop, and leave it there as long as the laptop is being used. The battery is for when you are away from an AC POower source, such as riding on the bus or plane.

Details: the surge in the laptop power supply if it is plugged into the laptop first, the wall second, causes serious spikes to corrupt the mainboard, the power management unit, possibly blowing the ethernet port, plus other sensitive parts.

If it is under warranty, and you do it wrong, tests can often show that, and the warranty is voided. A Main Logic Board can cost up to half the total worth.

Not sure how many studies done on this, but over time, your battery life will decrease. The first time you charge your battery sets it optimum level, and things go down after that.
Normal practice is to use the laptop without the charger connected all the time. If you plan to use heavy software that will require more power, take out the battery and use direct power.
If you feel that there is a chance of electric breakdown, use it with the battery, but only sometimes. As the battery keeps charging, there are chances it's optimum level will decrease significantly quicker in this case.

IBM says :

If you primarily use your computer with ac adapter attached and only infrequently use battery power, battery deteoration may occur faster if the battery is constantly charged at 100%. Lowering the charge thresholds for your battery and periodically resetting the battery gauge will help increase battery lifespan.

I say: You can use the adapter but you should totally empty your battery once in a while.

It is likely better for the battery to cycle it all the way empty and all the way full to characterize it initially, after that it doesn;t seem to matter.
