It's OK to have a short letter, so single spacing is proper. Ideally, you would have 5"X8" paper, but nobody does anymore. Just make sure the text is centered on the page and you double or even triple space below the addressee and the above the signature line.

So, as you can see there are a variety of answers. This is because there is not a set standard for typing for word processors such as word.

Formatting a letter is essentially driven by two items: requirements and personal discretion.

1. Requirements for double spacing are sometimes to allow someone to read the letter better, but more often it is imposed to allow someone to make editorial comments easier after reviewing another person's letter.

2. Obviously, whatever way you believe is most legible is what you should use when writing for leisure.

If you are writing for school, competition, or professional you will probably want to find the requirements imposed by the organization.

You only really need to double space text when you are in school so the teacher can edit it more easily. So it is totally acceptable to single space your letter.

No- the only time in my life I have ever double spaced is for school when they demand you do it. I think its the stupidest format ever - you dont read newspapers or books in double spaced so you should be used to it, its a waste of paper and it looks like its printed for stupid people who cant read yet. Type it properly and dont patronize your reader.

Make it readable. 1-1/2 space may be fine. Are you just over a page? Set the spacing to 1.4 and you may be able to get it to one legible page.

Before you send it, ask, "Would I want to read this?"
