I love looking and learning how to do the latest styles in makeup and hair. Everytime I go to the MAC counter at the mall the makeup artists are always complimenting me on my makeup, but I was trying to decide if I would like to join them. I live in California and I notice that the makeup artist have to be a little bit eccentric with their look, wear black clothing all the time, and have to be really pretty. I'm an african-american woman (and yes, there are other african-american women that work in the department) and I'm cute, I do my makeup well and I'm friendly, but I just don't know if I would fit in? Is it hard to get hired by MAC? Is it worth it? What requirements are they looking for? Do you have to carry a certain look? Act a certain way? Do you have to go to school to enhance your makeup skills? My husband keeps saying that I should try, but if I decide that, I need to know what to expect? Please, can anyone help??????

I would jump at the chance to try this sort of job, get experience and the discount on the products. Cosmeticians get all kinds of samples too. You do not have to get that far out with your dress or make-up; just be yourself. I think customers are somewhat put off by all that artsy stuff a lot of cometics sales people affect and it would probably be nice and very refreshing to see a different type of person in that sort of position. I also think it is great to have African American ladies working in the cosmetics department because for so long it was so difficult for ethinic ladies to obtain cosmetics for their coloring and good advice on how to apply makeup.

Working For Mac Cosmetics

Yes I think so. I've been using MAC for a few years now and I really love a lot of their products. I use their foundation, powder, blush, eyeshadow, gel eyeliner, and lipsticks. The price may seem high initially but it's worth it because the products are good quality and last a long time. I haven't run out of any of my eyeshadows yet. I only have to go to MAC a few times a year to get the essentials (except if I want to get something extra/random)

The make up people at MAC are always a little out there. it would be against the law for them to only hire a certain kind of peson, so I would say go for it. If you love experimenting with bold looks, then MAC is for you. Not to mention if you worked the MAC counter, other women of color might be more interested in checking it out.

Many companies have Training programs & workshops to help educate their staff. I am sure MAC does too... also consider Sephora a freind's daughter love working for them.
I hate over the top make-up artist I would never use one.
Apply you never know.

i have heard that they are constantly doing re=education and learning new techniques...but who knows what kind of doors that could open for you...why not try something new...and i would rather see a real person behind a counter who understands the issues of a real woman anyday, not those barbie, skinny perfect mannequins

I'm thinking you would need a certificate is cosmetology.

To address your other questions, if you think working at Mac is something that you would enjoy, give it a try. And you don't have to look eccentric to work at Mac (although I know a lot of them do), you just have to have a certain unique look. As you stated, you could probably pull that off.

I wish you luck. Just remember, it's better to try something and fail, then to never try because you're scared.
