Well, as far as I can see it looks pretty strong, they are opening up those Tesco Express stores and big supermarkets all over the place. Unfortunately this is putting smaller shops out of business and taking away economy from local shops. Not good.

It's pretty good. They have lots of unused land that they own and can use for new developments.
OTOH they've been diversifying more and more and it's very hard to succeed in a lot of new markets at the same time. In particular, English companies starting to trade in the US, as Tesco is now doing, have historically had a bad time.
I've also read that there's not much by way of succession planning and that middle managers with no where to go within the company are leaving for competitors.
On the whole I think the prospects are good so long as it doesn't become over ambitious.

They look pretty strong at present but there are always competitors snapping at their heels. Asda are part of Wal Mart which is the largest retail chain in the world so have a lot of money to use. Sainsburys have a lot of loyal customers and are competing very hard but Tesco have diversified quite a lot and it is difficult to for a competitor to get at them on all fronts so as I see it their position is solid for a few years yet and you know what they say "the bigger they are the harder they fall" so I may have a different opinion in 5 years time

Extremely competitive - but the problem is, no one's actually competing - they're just complaining cos Tesco gets huge profits & doesn't help the farmers, etc. If Sainsbury's, Asda, etc. actually did something to make other people go to their stores, then perhaps Tesco wouldn't have the edge they have now. The other stores have no "appeal".
