Following the recent demonstration in London regarding the decision of the UK press to print the Danish cartoon of Mohammed, the police have been widely criticised for their apparent over their lenient policing of the march, which included flag burning, covered faces and even protesters dressed up as suicide bombers carrying "behead those who insult Islam" placards.

Britain's top ranking Muslim police officer, Tarique Ghaffur has called for far stronger policing, and is urging protesting with a covered face and flag burning to be made criminal acts.

On the other hand, Shami Chakrabati, Director of Liberty said new legislations were unnecessary and likened the reaction to "watching too many American movies".

Who's right? Thoughts? (And please don't turn this into another anti-Muslim rant, just sensible answers.)

If you take freedom of expression away from some people then you have to take it away from all of the people! We have the right of peaceful protest and no matter how distasteful we find the protest if they don't break the law then its up to them!

It would be terrible if, in response to this, new laws were brought in further restricting the rights of protesters!

So if we want free speech (which I do) we have to allow everyone free speech, whether we agree with them or not!!

Another "Anti-Muslim" Rant? who else Rants and Raves .preaching extremism , calling for "Death to the Infidel - the Non Believer" calling for Destruction and causing "Mayhem" on our streets ? ? ? Wearing a Disguise ,Face Masks and Burning our Flag.??? Whilst the right for peace full demonstrations is sacrosanct , enough is enough and the nature of any demonstration should be Judged by it,s content, and where it,s deemed to be unacceptable , our old ,but seldom used , friend the "Water Cannon" would surely help to "Cool " things Down ???Tarique Ghaffur is, in my opinion , Correct . I believe that this method would also be a usefull solution when Drunken Yobs are Fighting , Spewing and Uriniating in our Cities and Towns .

The "demonstrators" could have been arrested for breach of the peace, making threats to kill or causing alarm/distress. The police had the powers they needed to arrest those with the intimidatory banners - they didn't because cops tend to like an easy life, and it was easier to just let these thugs get away with it. This isn't about the tiny minority of nutcase Muslims, this is really about why do we tolerate our inept police forces.

Peaceful demonstrations are a part of the British lifestyle,as a matter of fact in this country we have a right to our opinions be we muslim, christian, atheist or whatever. However, I feel that people should not mask themselves or in anyway disguise themselves, this implies that they have broken,or are about to break the law, anyone feeling so strongly about something should be willing tostand up and be counted1

We all have the right to freedom of expression. Just because we do not agree or sympathise with the demonstrators does not mean they cannot demonstrate. Even the BNP are allowed to have marches and demonstrations.
