I also have a son, 22 months, and he loves books, balls, cars, blocks, drawing...
But you don't have to buy a lot of stuff. Get out the tupperware (can be stacked like blocks), wooden spoons, his favorite ball is a balloon punch ball! He has four crayons and I use the back of flyers for him to scribble on.
They are so fun at this age!! He loves to be outside so we take a lot of walks or hang out in the back yard and pick up leaves.
Your son will love anything as long as you play with him!!

little tike's car, they don't like the Kawasaki thing really, balls, cars, a broom, dust pan, rake, things to help around the house. a big push around dump truck, nothing like bob the builder, my son doesn't like bob, but this grandparents keep on buying the toys. Anything that has wheels on it. My son loves planes, train, and automobiles. Thomas the train is a big hit for him.

if you have toys already, dont buy new ones just recycle them. have a few baskets of toys put one out there once he gets board put another basket out there and take the old one away. but a crawler is a good toy

Blocks, basic puzzles, books, playdough...things that he can use over and over again.
