This question is much too general, because of the incredible range of people that this encompasses. Just looking at islands, there are people who live on Greenland, the world's largest island, which is an Arctic wasteland, and people who live in the archipelago of Hawaii, a tropical paradise that is just one part of the vast system of islands known as Polynesia. You need to select a few groups of island or coastal dwellers and research them individually.

People who live on islands and coastal plains do probably have a few things in common, like strong water-related skills such as fishing and seafaring.
