Trust me. Don't try these so called, "free" websites. You should try one that has a good Cpanel program. Not just web editors. I answer questions in here because I know of one I use taht I like to advocate for. It is called Mxweb free and paid hosting. It offers around 100 MB space and a couple GB bandwidth. It also offers an incredible webpage editor. Cpanel with FTP, MySQL, and tons more. Html, java, javascript, CGI, you name it. I really like it.

There are tons out there, but most of them splash ads all over your site.
Angelfire.com, for example, has 3 - 4 areas of ads per page - top, bottom, a pop-up and occasionally 2 ads at the top.
Completing the example of Angelfire, there are ways of suppressing the ads. The code to do this is just HTML, believe it or not!

<pre style="display: none"><!-- body --></pre>

You stick the above snippet of code BEFORE your tag, and no more ads.

But Angelfire is just one example, and you can compare them in this site:

As for HTML sites... just Google "HTML tutorials"

Tip: Code for Firefox, tinker for IE.
