Go to college/university and study it. I don't know the exact courseload, but I have a few friends studying it. They seem to have to take a lot of gym classes.

At my community college there is a two year program to become certified. check with yours or call a fitness center and find out from one of their trainers if there is another way to become certified. I have also seen some different things on line to become a personal trainer, maybe they have on line coursed too

I have some trainers in my Education PhD program. They all have B.A. degrees in kinesiology and M.A.'s in more specific topics related to their degrees. These are pretty common degrees - most every local university will offer a degree program to get you going.

From there, you have to learn how to teach and motivate people.
