Probably but you have to remember that one out of every eight Americans are living either at the poverty level or below it at the present time.

Without a doubt it would make life a little more bearable for a lot of them who are having difficulties in cutting it now!

What bothers me mainly with raising the minimum wage is that the Republicans are always voting against it!

I wonder what they have against poor people?

I've worked at convenience stores while the minimum wage increased. Within three months, the price of a bottle of pop went up a few cents, the price of bread went up a little, the price of eggs went up,etc. etc. After three months, the minimum wage increase didn't make any difference in how much a person could buy. Manufacturers know that when minimum wage increases and people have a few extra dollars in their pockets, they can raise prices to get hold of it.
Welfare? You can have a small family (of three people, say), earn far above minimum wage and still qualify for some government sponsored welfare program. An increase in minimum wage won't hurt them at all, let alone get them off welfare.

No. If people worked at all they wouldn't be on the welfare rolls.

There is no need for a federal minimum wage at all, not to mention an increase. With the vast differences in cost of living between states and regions of the US each state should be responsible for maintaining a minimum wage appropriate for their state.

Generally when an increase in the minimum wage occurs the small percentage of jobs in that band decreases, making less minimum wage jobs available.

Only if a family can survive on $6.00 an hour X2 after taxes.

It would be wonderful if everybody could afford a college education so they can make a decent wage. However for some people especially the ones who make minimum wage that will be a dream that will never come true.

I can barely make it on $20 an hour....how can anyone make it on minimum wage, with the price a gas, utilities, housing, food, not to mention the cost of health care and medications etc.......without help? it will help, but I doubt if it removes 1% of the people that NOW qualify to get off the welfare rolls. what will help is educating them so they can fill better paying jobs.

People on welfare don't work at all. Minimum wage doesn't affect them.

There would not be fewer people on Welfare, but there would be more people working, its called working under the table for cash. A very large percentage of the people on welfare work but there is no record of it just like there is no record of most illegals working.

I think not. The defacto minimum wage is greater than $5.15 per hour in many places. In my town for an example, Wal*Mart and the local grocery stores start employees at $6.50/ hour. That is the minimum wage for this area.

No...raise the minimum wage and the prices of everything you buy increase right along with it. No win.

That is one theory. Another is that the increased obligations to pay a higher minimum wage would result in increased costs all around. It is a complicated economic issue.
