Warm water can exist without cold water, assuming set standards for what is "warm" or "cold." Temperature is a measurement of the average speed of a molecule in a substance, so it is conceivable that there would be some world where all the water was say 100 degrees fahrenheit. There would be no cold water on that planet. However, warm and cold are arbitrary concepts, human created ideas, so perhaps the more notable way of putting it would be, if there was no cold water [let this be water under 100 degrees F] there would still be water referred to in such a way to imply that it is cooler, perhaps we would stick with the word cold, who knows?
What perhaps is more striking is that if there were no people, there would be no cold or warm water. Since these are human terms for a human world.
Can happiness exist w/o sadness
Let us reduce the range of happiness to this 1-49 1 is the most unhappy, 49 is the least unhappy, but unhappy nonetheless, 50 is absolutely neutral. 51-100 is varying degrees of happiness. Now let's say that the 1-49 range was simply eliminated. We can surely say that the same thing happens in the 51-100 range, the same chemicals are being released, and it is of course the same feeling. However, if we had never known sadness, the feeling would probably be less good. But that makes no sense, it is the same feeling, biologically, it is the same. Then there must be some other aspects to feelings, other aspects that make a feeling that is biologically identical to another, somehow better.
The problem is that we can say that happiness can exist without sadness, but we cannot say that it would be the same or even comparable to what we consider to be happiness with sadness. Our knowledge of sadness is inextricable from the way we interpret our feelings and in fact, our knowledge of sadness affects how we feel happiness, we are more receptive to it.

Define what you mean? What do you mean "can"? Happiness with out sadness? Sadness isn't a conditioned required to be happy. We get sad when our desires are unfulfilled, or there's a biochemical imbalance in the brain. If certain conditions were met, we could be happy 100% of the time. You'll die early, and you'll to let go of some desires such as friends, family, boyfriend etc... But here's how. You snort cocaine and/shoot heroin EVERY time you feel unhappy. That way, you won't feel unhappy. Yes it's "ruin" your life, and cut it short... But it refutes the argument.... No, you don't have to be sad EVER to be happy. Some people say the high from cocaine isn't real happiness... Whoever says that must think happiness is some magical pure stuff created by angels or something. Of course there can ne peace without war. 1. Stop having children until we say for certain that bringing a child in won't increase the likelihood of poverty, crime, or war. 2. Declare the worlds resources as the common heritage of all the worlds people. "If you were happy consistently, then it wouldn't be happiness, it would become a regular emotion." Do you not see your contradiction? And what's a regular emotion?

I think this matter is to be viewed from the subject and the Object angle only.
Hot or cold are attributes only for water. Water is always there . If water is seen form a distance we will never know if it is cold or hot. But we will know water , for sure.
happiness or sadness are only attributes for the soul. The soul is there for ever. . Soul is only a witness to the drama in life .. happiness or sadness.
The soul can truly live and never dies. It is the physical body and the mind that die.

That's all or nothing thinking. You're forgetting timing...Time is everything in our lives. It changes!
Yes happiness can exist without sadness........just think of childhood.....just think of a baby....happy! Just think of countries that help themselves when they have problems, and they don't criticize others who ask for help.....That's happiness in the purest form. Remember the old term "if we stick together, we shall make it"....it promises nothing but making it together over time.
Think of a country that celebrates life and death...because they believe in heaven...truely believe in Creation.
When you go to the ocean and they say it's 72 degrees in the ocean, it is warmed by the atmosphere.........not defined by cold water because at that time, cold water does not exist.
You can debate for the rest of your life, and that's ok but .....it does not replace work....while you're debating....who will take out the garbage, and clean the bathroom and make YOUR bed?!

In a way you make sense, and also nonsense. If you were judged to make sense, the judge will have to know non-sense when the judge hears it. I say that it,s all relative, when one person is happy about something, another is sad about it, like the final score at a game. Then a person in a situation of glory, can be even less happy then the next, to be judged sad about his rank to that capacity. This is envy, that can be inspirational to someone, then discouraging to others in the same instant, or time frame.

These are but words to express absence of the other depending on the attribute sought.
eg if you want to checkk how hot water is and it turns out to b cold then you simply say its not hot, lacks the attribute of being hot hence a word to describe that is cold.

Yes, but you perceive neither. Both would be external to the realm of your consciousness.
We live because we have the consciousness of living and dying.
