First, take off the bristles if it's a new model. If you can't take off the bristles, cover them with paper and painters tape. Then, starting at the front and working your way down, sand with 120 grit sandpaper. Then go to 180 grit. When you can hardly see the little "hairs" from the grain, hit that puppy with 220 grit for all you are worth! Use some elbow grease.
After the 220, rub some stain into it. (Whatever your favorite color is.) Let that dry, then get some spar varnish and put on three light coats, waiting betwen coats for it to dry. Sand with 400 wet and dry between coats. (Gently!)
That will take care of the chafing problem, and add to the resale value of your broom when you go to upgrade to a newer model. Good luck. I hear the new electric brooms are eligible for a tax rebate! (But you can't beat a classic!)

A sheet of fine grain sand paper is just the thing for sanding out the rough bits. PLUS, I always find wrapping the stick tightly with bubble wrap, then covering it with a double wrapping of fine suede, makes the ride so much comfier. Especially on those 'loop-the-loop, scare the living daylights out of people' bits! Even if you lose your grip slightly, you get a nice smooth recovery.
I did have a friend who adapted her stick to hold a wide bottom bicycle seat! It didn't show when she was riding (her voluminous cloak covered it, not to mention her ample backside!), but when it was parked outside the 'Cauldron and Cackles', it looked pretty stupid. Not to mention it threw the aerodynamics off tilt. I often wondered how on earth she'd get it off the ground especially after she'd had a few!
Safe flying.

Obviously needs a good rub down......... how old is the broomstick, if its under 16 years old you better be careful as there could be a question of interfering with an under age broomstick!

Stick some sandpaper to your inner thighs for the next few days - that'll stop the chaffing and get rid of the rough bits. Dust yourself down after though coz if wearing black it could be mistaken for pubic dandruff :-) xx
