I saw a documentary that had a cave where prehumans had built fires in many places around the cave over the hundreds of years. Later in history ancient humans also lived in the cave, but they built fires in the mouth of the cave, exclusively. At the mouth of the cave the smoke was allowed out and the fire kept the animals away. Same technology used by two different species, but one understood consequence, adapted to improve outcome, and continued that information through generations.
