Only if you allow others to view it. In yahoo messenger, no one can access your camera unless you authorize them to. For that you get a message that the user "abc" is trying to view your webcam. Then it's up to you whether you allow or decline.

In case of viruses and trojans...well anything can happen. Hackers can even read your hard disk.

Yes, unfortunately. However, a Trojan or special application is needed for such thing. Only a small amount of Trojans (I've only seen one) can access your PC camera.
