The reasons for the outbreak of World War I are a complicated issue; there are many factors that intertwine. Some examples are:

Fervent and uncompromising nationalism
Unresolved previous disputes
The intricate system of alliances
Convoluted and fragmented governance
Delays and misunderstandings in diplomatic communications
The arms races of the previous decades.
Rigidity in military planning

To put it simply: you have hubris (excessive pride) on the part of Europeans, which is manfisted in their colonialism/imperialism. Then you have alliances and an arms buildup, and the corresponding militarism.

But in the end, it was a big pissing contest among too-rich and too-strong countries. A powder keg, if you will, ignited by a fourteen year old. Four reasons:

1. Hubris
2. Imperialism
3. Colonialism/Imperialism
4. Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and resulting "blank check" (we'll do whatever you want to protect you) Germany gave to Austria-Hungary

Greed, greed, greed and more greed.

I studied history along with accounting.
History to me was the same:

One person is number 1 & wanted more so the people attacked.
Another group wanted to be number one so they attacked #1.
Another group joined either the #1 or other group.

......all throughout history....it seemed to be the study of men..............fighting so I got bored studying history, so I concentrated on accounting...numbers don't fight! Numbers can be manipulaed but they don't fight. They just are, and that's good enough for me.
