1 5 4 2 6 3 7 8 firing order
#1 is the passengers side front with 1 2 3 4 on that side
#5 is the drivers side front with 5 6 7 8 on that side .
If you set you timing by ear , set it where is rpms sound good , kill it an see if it starts smooth , if it has a hard time turning over retard it a little ,then test drive and retard it if it pings.
The last year ford made the 390 FE was 1976.

It should be on the manifold for the 460 it is 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8 for the 351 and 400 it is: 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 On the 400 engine it is 10 before for the 460it is 14 before or 8 before with the 3.25:1 rear axle. sorry, but this is the closest I could come for you. The only books I could find went back to 1976.

Is to much timing bad for the motor ?? and how high can I set it at .my 390 is set at 13 btdc can I set it higher then that

8*btc and 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8 if it doesnt hit a lick your cap is wired 180* out.
