I already try to help people each day. I have volunteered with a number of organizations over the past 35 years, and work in the community mental health field. If I had surplus wealth, I would be able to do more, perhaps start a community mental health clinic or homeless shelter, or something.

That is an option or you could take that money and use it toward helping a whole group of people...I volunteer for hospice and I would more than likely use any surplus money to help fund programs for grief and bereavement. These programs help people from all walks of life and all ages...they have a program specifically aimed toward children who have lost a parent or close loved one called Butterflies. As you can tell I am very passionate about my involvement with hospice. They helped so much when my father was ill and passed away in Jan of 2001 and in some way this is my way of giving back.

Personally, I would began with social issues, such as children in school who don't have enough to eat or clothing to wear, mother's without husbands that are struggling, young people who want to go to college, but do not have the means, men who want to work, have the talent, but are not able to find jobs. These people, among other issues that are too numerous to mention, need the help and unfortunately, because as a nation we want to help those outside the country, fall through the proverbial cracks and are lost. It would give me great satisfaction to help those within our own country.

Friend,
It all depends on the persons upringing and genetic factors. If a person has faced a lot hardships and then became rich he will definitely provide charity whereas those born with a silver spoon rarely do it or do it to evade income tax. Most religions make it mandatory for its followers to provide charity. As for me I would definitely provide charity in whatever meagre ways as possible even though I am not that rich.
