There are houses made from matchsticks.

The first pattern has 1 house and 6 matchsticks.

The second pattern has 2 houses and 12 matchsticks

The third pattern has 3 houses and 18 matchsticks.

There is also a graph with the number of match sticks on it. One side of the graph is the number of matchsticks (m). The other side is the pattern numer (n).

The graph has three points, one at (6,1), another at (12, 2), and the last one at (18, 3)

I need a formula for m in terms of n, but i don't get it. Can you help?

Sorry if you don't get i didnt know how to explain it properly.

like a lot of people said, whether they put it m=6*n or m=6n..

thats right :D and when i scanned what people had responded.. someone even explained it :)

and if you dont understand their explanation, try plugging-in the numbers. like when you put in a number for n (like one of em was 2 when m was 12..) and its true! 6 x 2 (which is n) = 12 (which is m)

m = 6n

because if you plot the three points, you will see that in slope intercept form y=mx + b, there is a slope of m=6 and a y-intercept of b=0. This give you y=6x, or in this case, m=6n.

Hehe..its simple....
when:
n=0, m=0
n=1, m=6
n=2, m=12
n=3, m=18
So, in each case, m is 6 times n. And hence, m=6n! got it?
