Writable CD - Write Once Read Many times (WORM)
Rewritable - Write Many Times Read Many Times

Basically a writable CD only allows you to burn data onto it ONCE. The data is the permanently Burnt onto it. E.g an audio or software CD you buy from stores

A rewritable allows you to write over written data over a 1000 times, effectively like a tape recorder.

Nowadays there are DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW but i think thats for another question...

When you use a writable CD, you can only burn it once. When using a rewritable CD, you can burn it multiple times, and erase the contents on your CD. Their are ways of using a writable CD many times too. if by ny chance, your burning program gives you a option of not finalizing a CD, then you can add and overwrite contents on that CD. Also you can only burn a rewritable CD 1000 times. Try going to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CD-RW for more information on the subject.

a writable cd is when you can only save data onto it once. Once there is something saved on it, this CD cannot be used to save anything else even if it is not full. A rewritablle CD is just like a floppy where you can save and delete as many times as you like.

CD is all about writing data on to it. In a CD-R, data once written cannot be erased. But data written on a CD-RW can be erased. That's why it is called rewritable CD.
